Dunston Family Church: About Us

Our beginning
Dunston Family Church was started in the early 1980's by Ed Nichols, a teacher who worked at Dunston Comprehensive School. Ed organised lunchtime Bible studies for school pupils. From humble beginnings, with the help of a few dedicated friends, and following the Mission England Crusade in 1984 at Roker Park, Sunderland, Ed began church meetings in Dunston Community Centre, on Sunday evenings.

In 1984, Billy Graham's Mission England crusade included a visit to Roker Park in Sunderland, where he addressed tens of thousands of people over an eight-night period in May.

For the first time in his 40 year ministry, he preached with his cloth cap on in the damp cold of Sunderland's Roker Park Stadium, to open his second series of Mission England Meetings.

Dunston Community Centre

As Dunston Family Church grew, we became more active in the communities of Dunston and Teams.

When Dunston Activity Cente was opened in 1986 by Gateshead Council, Dunston Family Church was one of the first regular customers, renting rooms for church services, Sunday school, creche, and midweek activities.

In early 2013, Dunston Family Church was approached by Gateshead Council, with a view to asset transferring Teams Community Centre to Dunston Family Church. The building was renamed, and Teams Life Centre was born! TLC is leased from Gateshead Countiil on a 30 year lease, enabling us to run projects directly withing the Teams community.

In 2015 after renting rooms for Church meetings in Dunston Activity Centre since its opening in 1986, Dunston Family Church acquired our second building, again on a 30 year lease, allowing Dunston Family Church to become permanently established in the communuty which it serves.
